The name Sims is not new to the hunting industry. They have manufactured some excellent vibration control products for the archery world for several years now. This however is a product made by Sims for guns. Take a look at most of the recoil pads that come standard on rifles and shotguns. The majority of them are made of hard thin plates of rubber. The need for a high quality recoil pad that truly does absorb "recoil" was obvious and Sims rose to the challenge and created a recoil pad that is unlike the others. Sims offers three types of recoil pads for your choosing. The slip on type, the grind to fit types (which Sims does recommend a Gunsmith to install them) and the type I used, the pre-fit type. Why would someone want to switch out their recoil pads on their rifles? The answer is simple: Pain! From shooting a 20 gauge with a nice kick to it, to shooting a 7-mm .08 with a hefty thump on it, I was anxious to give the new Sims Recoil Pad a try. First you must order the Sims Recoil pad to fit your specific gun. The pads average about $30 per pad. The pads are still fairly new on the market, but in time, your local gun shop should have a selection to choose from. I suggest shooting your gun with your old pad still in place several times. Making a mental note of what that gun's recoil feels like. Then remove your old recoil pad and prepare the stock for your new Sims recoil pad. This is not difficult, for the pre-fit type I used, you simply need to fill your old screw holes with a substance that will then allow you to screw in the new screws from your Sims Recoil Pad. I used a small wooden dowel rod, cut them to size, put a drop of glue in the holes and slid in the dowels, wait until they are set and lightly sand off the ends until the butt of the gun is a completely smooth level. Then according to directions, I pre-drilled the holes using the Sims template, then screw in your Sims Recoil Pad into your newly filled holes. It is that easy. Now shoot your gun and see for yourself the difference the pad makes. The difference from the old pad to the new Sims Recoil Pad is obvious. I found that I was a more accurate shot using the Sims Recoil Pad then the old factory installed pad. Why? Simple because I was more relaxed. I didn't have to worry about holding the stock so tightly to absorb the recoil. I believe that the product does what it claims and that it does absorb about 50% of the recoil. I did not base my product review on scientific methods for determining the recoil of a gun. I based it on comfort, and comfort alone. I found the Sims Recoil Pad to do what it said it would do. Reduce the amount of recoil. The soft marshmallow type of rubber padding that has built in air chambers felt considerably more comfortable then the factory recoil pads. The "ouch" factor was reduced greatly. The only negatives that I discovered are the Sims Recoil Pad is much thicker than standard recoil pads. It will add additional length to your stock. You must take the time to properly prepare you gun stock to receive the Sims Pad. This is a simple procedure but it does take a little effort. An additional negative point would be that it does not come standard on guns. In the future when I buy guns, I will figure on adding an additional $30 to the purchase price for a Sims Recoil Pad. Finally, the big negative that I found with this new recoil pad was the additional ammunition that I had to buy. With shooting made more comfortable, I wanted to shoot more and more. The Sims Recoil Pad gets my vote as a product worth adding to your guns.
