Not many hunting brands are able to cater fully to the outdoorswoman and merge luxurious style with crucial function. Time and time again, we find ourselves resigned to wear less than proper-fitting hunting gear in order to achieve concealment, quietness, and toughness afield. There is no reason to make such a sacrifice, ladies! SHE-Safaris, based out of Texas, USA, outfits women hunters in flattering gear that withstands all demands of the sport. SHE-Safaris caters especially to the international huntress who finds herself equally attracted to the North American plains and the Namibian desert.

SHE-Safaris clothing is manufactured in sizes small through extra-large [regular scale], and made with 100% cotton and reliable YKK zippers. The clothing pieces are available in light and heavier weighted fabrics, and in solid neutral bush colours as well as in original camouflage patterns. I have tested the heavier fabric of this safari line both in the clear-cuts and deciduous forests of the southeastern States and the bushveld of South Africa.

At first glance indoors, the green camouflage pattern looks somewhat bright and out of place. To get the full effect of how capable this pattern is, you must take it outside. There is no other camouflage clothing pattern on the market that is like that designed by SHE-Safaris. It is imperative that you use the SHE-Safari undertone (green, grey, or brown) complementary to the habitat you will hunt so that you will actually be concealed and not label yourself as an oddity of the terrain. As long as you pay attention to the colour palette of the landscape you are hunting, you will be impressed with how well the unique camouflage breaks up your outline, blending you inconspicuously into your surroundings. The green pattern works best for me in the lush jungles where bushbuck and bongo can be found, as well as the summer-greened forests of America. The patterned greys and browns are a must for the autumn woodlands in Europe and the States and can be used in the drier velds of Africa as well.

The convertible zip-off safari pants are made fully of durable cotton and convert in a flash to deep-pocketed shorts. In a flash, I could remove the fabric of the long pant afield without unlacing my boots. There are lightweight (5 oz) and safari (8 oz) versions, though the heavier—and even more durable—material is still breathable enough to be comfortable in warmer conditions. The pants have a 32.75” inseam and the shorts a 5” inseam.

The drawstring cargo pants contour the woman’s body superbly and have an added button closure for a secure fit. Wait-a-bit thorns, stinging nettle, and other unwanted flora are not able to circumvent the additional drawstring closure/gaiter at the bottom of my pants.

Camouflage-patterned pants in a 32” inseam have front, back, and leg pockets with zipper closures. The matching cap sleeve shirt is 5 oz. French twill and pairs so beautifully with either the solid or camouflage pants. Moreover, its construction is completely in tune with the female hunter. The pattern is right at home in the swamps pursuing feral hogs as it is in the cool places where bushpigs root in the heat of the day.

My favourite piece of clothing on the SHE-Safari line is their Long-sleeve Safari Shirt, specifically in dark olive. This long-sleeved shirt is so spectacular that in the safari weight (8 oz.), it can almost double as a light jacket. The double bush-style pockets not only accent the shirt, but also serve as handy storage, though probably not normally for needle caps like I chose. The versatile sleeves roll and strap to ¾ length, perfect for leaving hands free for shooting in the bush and quickly gutting a harvest if need be. I have taken many an animal on tough safaris using the long-sleeved safari shirts by SHE-Safaris, and the clothing always works for me, never against me.

I use the Safari Zip Jacket not only in my work with wildlife and hoofstock in Georgia, but more frequently for the cold mornings and evenings when I am hunting southern Africa. The collar turns up nicely, a gem when the frigid morning air hits your face without warning. The cinch waist decreases bulk around the middle and the button cuffs securely fit the jacket around narrow wrists. The gorgeous jacket is made with different hues of green in the interior and the shell. Two spacious side pockets also allow for you to fit calls, extra ammunition, or your hands comfortably into the jacket. Hunters can also opt to carry small game harvests in the pockets for a short while if necessary. This I have done several times, and with a cold water rinse, blood washes out immediately – no worries.

SHE-Safaris does have a khaki choice for consumers, though I recommend that for upland wear on North American prairies only, unless you break it up with greens and browns. Professional hunters and other field professionals in southern Africa know that generally, light khaki is not the ideal colour for safari wear. This safari clothing line also offers both light and dark olive colours for those of us at home in southern Africa.

The neutral olive colours are extremely versatile for my hunting. I am as effectively concealed on a mid-winter grey squirrel hunt in the States as I am on the bushveld on a brisk June hunt in South Africa. As a researcher working on Cape buffalo in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, I require clothing that holds up for long days of strenuous field work. I use the heavyweight field pants while I wrestle to get blood and faecal samples from half-immobilised buffalo and test them for tuberculosis. Combined with the long-sleeve safari shirt, the outfit is as functional as it is fashionable.

Take a look at SHE-Safaris’ advertisement in your next SAFARI journal from Safari Club International, and consider the investment into quality safari-wear that will prove to be practical and ideal for the huntress’ pursuit of game from the expansive Americas to mountainous Europe and the wilds of Africa.
