Looking out my window to the familiar sight of the Autumn landscape preparing itself for the breath of another Winter, I find it hard to believe that I am in the midst of my 21st season as a bowhunter, the last three of which that have been with traditional equipment. It seems that this great odyssey which began so many years ago reached yet another level of personal fulfillment when I picked up a stickbow and began to shoot.
I wish I could say that mastering the simple stick was easy for me, that I possessed some inherent talent or great athletic ability. In fact, all I really possessed was unquenchable passion. And as it turns out, that passion mixed with a healthy dose of perseverance, was just enough!
The first animal I was fortunate enough to take with traditional equipment was a plump Oklahoma wild boar. He wasn't a brute, mind you, but in my book he was a prize. Countless hours of practice had resulted in a perfect shot and a short blood trail, the true reward for my efforts.
Since that first traditional harvest, I have used my recurves to take a number of other animals including pronghorns, hogs, mule deer, and whitetails. Each one has been a special tribute to my love of traditional archery and the historical roots of bowhunting .
Being asked to join the Pro Staff of Women Hunters is a tremendous honor and yet another exciting milestone on my traditional bowhunting journey. Not only is it a pleasure to be associated with an organization so committed to furthering the knowledge and skills of women and their families in the field, but it is an opportunity for me to make a personal contribution to advancing the lifestyle and traditions of hunting. If I can somehow acquaint others with the fulfillment and joy that I have found with a bow in hand, that will be a gratifying indeed! After all, this isn't just a journey, it's also a whole heck of a lot of fun!
