Shooting Illustrated Heats Things Up
FAIRFAX, Va. – The dog days of summer may be a little warm for some, but Shooting Illustrated Associate Editor Adam Heggenstaller learned to like it hot when he took a close look at the new .17 Remington Fireball. His findings, which appear in September’s issue of Shooting Illustrated, promise to bring new flame to the varmint- and predator-shooting crowd.
Heggenstaller was among the first to field test the .17 Remington Fireball, which sends a 20-grain AccuTip-V bullet sizzling downrange at a factory-reported 4,000 feet per second. After shooting more than 500 rounds in Remington’s Model 700 SPS Varmint and Model Seven, cranking up the chronograph to check velocity and evaluating accuracy on both paper and prairie dogs, he made some surprising discoveries.
His story, “Sweet Heat,” hits the newsstands on Aug. 18, and answers if the .17 Remington Fireball lives up to the factory’s red-hot velocity claims, to what extent it generates fouling and where it could have an edge over other varmint rounds.
