Winners Announced in

NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund’s

Second Amendment Essay Contest

FAIRFAX, Va. The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund (NRACRDF) recently announced the winners of its 2006 annual essay contest for students in the United States, celebrating the Second Amendment as an integral part of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Sunjay K. Gorawara, 16, of Buffalo Grove, IL, won first place in the Senior Category of the 2006 NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund’s Second Amendment Essay Contest.

The theme for the essay was “The Second Amendment to the Constitution: Why it is important to our nation.” The contest was open to all students enrolled in an elementary, junior high, or high school during the 2006-2007 academic year who had not previously received a prize. Essays were judged on originality, scholarship, and presentation.

Essays were judged in two categories: Senior (grades 10-12) and Junior (grades nine and below), with separate prizes awarded to the winners in each category. First prizes were $1,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds; second prizes, $600 in Savings Bonds; third prizes, $200 in Savings Bonds; and honorable mentions, $100 in Savings Bonds. Due to an unprecedented response of over 900 essays, an additional 100 students received special awards of $50 in Savings Bonds.

In the Senior category, first place went to Sunjay K. Gorawara, 16, of Buffalo Grove, IL, while Matthew Dlabich, 14, of Chester, MD, won first place in the Junior category. A complete list of winners follows.

Commenting on his win, Gorawara said, “The reason I am such an active supporter of the 2nd Amendment is because it can be applied to almost anyone. It is not discussed by the public as much as some of the other amendments, and it directly affects everyone’s well-being. The safety of the American people is a large issue and needs to be brought up more in political discussion.”
