The name of this section is Physically Challenged. Being physically challenged can range from mild to severe. I would like to cover all points and how we can help each other to still be able to enjoy our love for hunting. In October of 1998, I was diagnosed with FMS (Fibromyalgia).
For years I was able to go hunting alone and it gave me a sense of pride... Ladies, I know you understand how great it feels. It gave me such a feeling of independence and made me feel proud to be a lady hunter. Don't get me wrong; I love going with my husband Danny. We would ride together but then go to our own places to hunt.
Hunting season, 1999, brought a close to my hunting alone. Danny and I went bowhunting and as usual went to our separate stands. I was hunting the edge of a field that we had planted. It was such a beautiful day...the weather was perfect. I was sitting there enjoying the view when four big does came out with a couple of small ones. I was so very excited just to watch them feed from the upper end of the field to where I was hunting in a ladder stand. I eased up when they were about halfway down the field. I waited until one doe was feeding 20 yards from me. I raised my bow gently and slowly, watching her feed. Just as I was pulling my bow back, being ever so careful, one of the yearlings saw me and started running. Needless to say, they all took off running and darn I was so frustrated. There was nothing I could do, so I just waited until dusk and climbed down from the ladder stand.
I was walking toward the upper end of the field when my legs gave out. I could not take another step. My legs just would not cooperate; there I was standing at the edge of the field, not able to take another step. I just stood there until Danny drove up in the truck to where I was supposed to meet him. I had forgotten my flashlight, so I could not signal him. All I could do was wait until he got out of the truck and yell for him to come help me. He took my bow and helped me back to the truck. It was very slow going but we made it. I have not hunted alone since that day. I never know when my legs will go out or something else go wrong. I have a very hard time climbing to hunt a tree stand and once I am there, it is so hard to sit still due to the pain. I was not able to hunt very much during our 2000-hunting season, but I did harvest my first deer with my bow. I only bowhunted what little I did get to hunt.
I know the challenge to hunt for me is nothing compared to other women hunters. I do want us to be able to reach all levels of hunting for the physically challenged. Feel free to email me if I can answer any questions or just be there when you need a friend. Sue
