Misconceptions

I would say that some people have different misconceptions about some things because of how things are perceived.

First, let’s look at the crossbow and how many people perceive it. I have seen so many people get into heated discussions over crossbows on bulletin boards. They seem to feel like it is just like using a gun. Just because it looks like a gun, it is thought to shoot as far as a gun. I would not take a shot over 30-yards with the crossbow that I have.

You have to remember that this device will have either a traditional or a compound style bow on it. The draw is 150 lbs with no let off. You put your foot in the stirrup on the ground and pull it to cock it. They have a string device that is suppose to help you cock your crossbow but it did not help me at all. Every time I wanted to shoot my crossbow Danny (my husband) had to cock it for me. When I would go hunting, he would cock it for me and I would go to my stand with it cocked and the safety on. I really didn't like doing this but it was the only way. I just did not like using this crossbow at all.

For me, comparing a bow to a crossbow was just no comparing at all. They belong in two different worlds. I would rather shoot my bow any day. At least I could shoot it alone and didn't have to get anyone to cock it for me. The more I learned about a crossbow, it just made me that much more unhappy with it. I found it to be heavy, hard to use, and not easy to shoot. For me, there was just no easy way to carry it to the stand already cocked and ready to shoot but there was no other way for me to use it since I could not cock it myself. I just found it to be more of a burden than any enjoyment at all.

While I was trying to shoot (Baby) my Mathews Mustang bow, I messed up my right shoulder after my lung surgery two years ago. I was not able to lift my arm level with my shoulder. My shoulder and my arm have never been the same since the surgery. This is why I tried out the crossbow. I can only pull my bow back about two inches now. It really breaks my heart. It seems to be taking my last bit of independence away from me.

I have to be honest with you and let you know that my crossbow is old. A friend gave it to Danny. We bought a scope, carbon bolts, and one of those strings that is supposed to help you cock it. The string was a waste of money! This is the only experience that I’ve had with a crossbow. Living on a fixed income there was no way I could purchase a new crossbow. The prices are unreal for anyone living on a fixed income. There are many low-priced bows on the market but I didn't see any low-priced crossbows.

Second, let’s look at how I am perceived. To be honest with everyone I am not sure how I am perceived. As you read in the paragraph above I am on a fixed income. I have been disabled with fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and other health problems since 2001. Because of all the health problems that I am not able to do as much now as I did in the past. WomenHunters®, hunting and life in general is more of a challenge now.

We have many wonderful leaders that help out at WomenHunters®, Inc. and if it wasn't for them we would not be where we are today. All of our ladies are volunteers including myself. We are a non profit group and just want to help others.

I admit it has been a struggle at times but God always gets me through it. Like last year when my left kidney just did not want to get well. It gave me a fit from October to February. My doctor just stopped it from shutting down on me so I am very thankful. God is good! He does take care of us and is there just when we need Him.

If you want to be a part of WomenHunters®, Inc. you can be in so many ways:
  • Join our club.
  • Become a writer or part of the staff.
  • Join on our bulletin board and become part of our wonderful group of ladies there.

I have thought about what I had planned to do this year. With physical therapy I was able to get my arm back over my head again so I could wash my hair with two hands again. I have been working out with my Bowfit to work my arm and shoulder up slowly but it just leaves me very sore. I have decided to give the Draw Loc a try. I am going to use it on Baby and see how it works out. At least I will be out there trying. There is nothing like bowhunting once you get bitten. You just can't give it up, it’s like a favorite food or thing to do. You just can’t get enough of it.
