WomenHunters HOW Mentoring Program

         History

WomenHunters organization was founded in 2000 by avid hunter Sue Burch and her belief that women hold the key to the future of hunting.  Sue sought other women who had a passion for hunting and a common belief that more women were needed within the industry to encourage other women to experience the thrill of the hunt.   Educating women primarily by articles written by volunteer staff members and sharing knowledge online through our forums was key to the organizations early success, but as the organization grew, WomenHunters staff and Board of Directors became eager to do more to promote hunting and conservation to ensure hunting for future generations.  In 2007 talks began focusing on creating a mentoring program.  When Linda Burch became Executive Director and Alyssa Haukom became President in late 2007, their goal became clear; to create a mentoring program that could be implemented in 2008 and would teach women and youth HOW to hunt and write about their experiences.

Mission Statement

The mission of the WomenHunters HOW (Hunting and Outdoor Writing) Mentoring Program is twofold; first to encourage women and youth to acquire hunting and outdoor knowledge; to learn effective and safe hunting practices and to experience hunts, all through proper instruction, education and ongoing guidance by a knowledgeable and dedicated woman mentor, and second to learn how to write effective articles about their experiences and share their new knowledge with others through creative writing and photography.

Vision Statement

WomenHunters HOW Mentoring Program envisions touching thousands of lives by aiding and enabling women and youth to become actively involved in hunting, conservation and the future of hunting across the United States .
