I took the Mustang bow to an archery pro-shop and authorized Mathews dealer a few weeks ago to have a cobra three pin fiber sight and a peep installed along with an H. H.A. drop away rest. I do like the advantage of unhindered arrow flight that a drop-away rest offers and the H.H.A. is a nice compliment to this bow.
At 3.2 pounds, this bow is not a lightweight in performance by any
means. That said the weight of this bow in combination with being well crafted complimented the Mustangs accuracy at the target. What is more impressive than the close groups of my Gold Tip 3555 carbon arrows, is the speed of this bows shorter brace height of five 3/4 inches.
I have used other bows and each one has a different feel I like the hold of a smaller grip, but as an open-handed shooter the slightly larger grip I found the Mustang to have actually helped to hold it in place at release.
The Mustang is available in 19 to 26 inch draw lengths. My draw length of 24 inches is used to a much lighter bow, which meant more recoil. In my opinion, what the new Mathews Mustang offers in the lack of recoil and in the comfort of an open-handed hold during release is what a bow should be.
With a range of draw weight options in 20, 30, 40, and 50 pounds, this new bow is definitely an option for beginner archers, even children. My Mustang is set at a 50-pound draw weight and I am comfortable shooting such a short draw at that poundage. The draw itself is tight so a firm hold is required at a full draw to avoid creeping forward before release. I use the Little Bitty Goose single caliper release by Scotts and with a little practice and concentration have been able to correct this.
I love the Mathews HD Realtree Hardwoods new camouflage pattern and appreciate the crisp clean look created by their cable guard rollers, which permit smooth drawing with a quiet flight. Mathews interchangeable weighted Harmonic Dampers allow me to choose the weight and amount of recoil control I need by quickly inserting them into rubber bushings on both ends of the riser. For added absorption of noise and vibration, the Mathews Mustang also features rubber String Suppressors that cradle the string creating a smoother release. This bow also features the Mustang Performance Cam that is a new Perimeter Weighted cam, which mimics a flywheel resulting in increased arrow speed while reducing recoil and noise.
Overall the Mathews Mustang is comfortable to hold and easy to draw. I felt confidence in shooting this new bow because it brought me to the same anchor with each draw. Anyone who has had to adjust and find the best fit in a new bow set-up understands the value of picking up a new product like this and feeling a perfectly smooth draw through to the quiet release with an exceptionally accurate shot. This is definitely the bow I will take hunting come archery season in the Missouri timber.
In a final word, my hat is off to Mathews Bows for their consideration and leadership in clean advertising. When I finally put the bow down for a moment and dove into the written material that accompanied my new Mustang the first thing I noticed was the magazine ads. I applaud Mathews for their professionalism in precluding ads with sexual tones or derogatory images of women or (men). Not crossing that moral line adds so much more to the value of the product and Mathews overall image in my opinion.
