I grew up in a small rural town in Central New York State in a family that was very outdoor minded. My father was an avid hunter, so I was brought up around hunting and fishing. My parents took my sister and me camping in the Adirondacks each summer. Even when we weren’t camping I was usually outdoors playing or helping my father with chores.

I didn’t personally get interested in hunting until I was an adult, but my family’s appreciation of the outdoors made me the person I am today. I now have two German shorthaired pointers, Elsie and Porter, that I train, hunt and occasionally run in field trials. I enjoy shooting and am certified to teach the NRA's basic shotgun class.  I also like to big game hunt and just had my first archery elk season.

In June of 2007 I met my husband, Glenn Melus, and a year later were married. Glenn and I live in Carbondale, CO with our dogs. Glenn is a fly fishing guide (and addict). Together we enjoy fly fishing the gold-medal trout waters in our area. Glenn has taught me a lot about fishing and I have taught him a lot about hunting over dogs.  We make a pretty good couple. Glenn is originally from Massachusetts, so we also have a common love for the waters and the forests of the Northeast.

I hold a B.S. degree in Natural Resources from Cornell University.  My professional experience includes forest ecology research assistant at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY, naturalist at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, forest health biotech for the U.S. Forest Service, Director of Operations at the Aspen Global Change Institute and PR Account Executive at Backbone Media.

I recently opened, Melus Outdoors, LLC, a public relations and communications business specialized for hunting, fishing, shooting sports and resource conservation.

I am the outdoor writer for my local newspaper, the Sopris Sun and am published in the NWTF's Turkey Country and the Bird Hunting Report. While at the Aspen Global Change Institute, I co-edited and co-authored the report, Climate Change in Aspen: An Assessment of Impacts and Potential Responses, for the City of Aspen.
In my free time (when I can find it), I enjoy training the dogs, writing, photographing, drawing and painting the sporting life and the natural world around me. You can read about my adventures on my blog, www.DeerflyDiaries.com.
