Hello fellow huntresses. I am so pleased to become a part of this up and coming organization. I feel very honored to have been asked to write for Women Hunters. I hope that you all enjoy my stories as much as I enjoy writing them. My name is Susan Phenix and I was born and raised in the great state of Michigan. I have lived here my entire life, except for a few years when I left to go away to college in Virginia. It was a beautiful place and a great adventure to live there, but Michigan is where my heart is.

I find most of my enjoyment in the outdoors and Michigan is certainly a wonderful place for that. I grew up spending most of my time exploring the woods and rivers behind my childhood home. The memories I have of my brother and I playing all day in our own little wilderness are some of my fondest. I have four brothers and one sister, with me being the youngest. You could say that my brothers sort of raised me. They taught me that I could do whatever I put my mind to. Each had their individual interests, most of which included some form of outdoor fun. This enabled me to experience many different outdoor activities, making me fortunate enough to become what I like to think of as well rounded. Some might just plain call me a crazy thrill seeker. I do know that I am very thankful my brothers exposed me to everything from horses to hunting and most everything in between. You could define my personality as someone who is part gypsy and part explorer and who loves to have fun. If a mountain is in front of me, I must climb it to see what is on the other side.

I have a seventeen year old son, whose name is Zach.  We spend most of our spare time outdoors. He hunts as well, but fishing is his passion. He and I spend a lot of time fishing the awesome lakes and streams Michigan has to offer. We also make time to go and check out what the other states have to offer for fishing. A couple years ago, while on a trip to Spain, we snuck off and fished the Mediterranean Sea. That was an unforgettable experience. For the past six years, I worked as the coordinator for Legends Ranch (a whitetail hunting operation), here in Michigan. I was lucky enough to meet people from all over the world that shared the same love for hunting. Through the years there, I learned more and more about hunting and the different types that where out there (I still have so much to learn).

In December of 2003, I left Legends Ranch to start In Range an all ladies hunting show. Our main focus is hunting big game, but I have an addiction to turkey hunting that started about ten years ago. Since the majority of my hunting is done with archery equipment, hunting turkeys with a bow was a natural next step and in May of 2004, I became the first woman to complete a world slam on turkeys with a bow. I did it in fifty-seven days. I have a desire to travel, explore, and find adventure, so hunting has fit in perfectly with my lifestyle. There is no better adventure or expedition than a hunting trip. I look forward to sharing hunting expeditions and trading stories with all of you. I can't wait to get to know everyone! Keep Well, Susan
