The BAO Experience

My Texas experience at Brazos Archery Outfitters was in a word unforgettable! The area we went to is beautiful. I truly felt at home with the staff and friends at Brazos. I was a bit nervous as I have never hunted a subspecies of turkey other than the Eastern birds we have here at home. Also having never hunted turkeys out of a blind it was an all together new experience. The staff at Brazos made us feel comfortable with the transition and helped us in any way possible.

Upon arrival the weather was going down hill fast. We got there early Friday morning and were fortunate enough to get on birds as soon as we were in the blind. The blind we borrowed wasn’t ideal. The color was dark for Texas and a bit shiny. So the first few birds would come into around fifty yards and turn and run away. It took us awhile to figure out the blind we had brought was the problem. That afternoon the wind got even worse causing a bad dust storm so we went back to camp. There we enjoyed resting and unpacking. The accommodations were great for a hunting camp. We were itching to get back to hunting but the weather wasn’t cooperating so we studied the aerial maps of the area we were allowed to hunt. Brazos is a huge place with great stand layouts that are very simple to find and use. They are color coded and the trails are perfectly marked. The next morning the wind was still blowing really badly but we knew the birds were there so we prepared to go out again. This time we decided to setup in the blind that Brazos already had erected over the area we were hunting. It was comfortable and the birds were use to it. We worked several birds but were either caught drawing or were unsuccessful in the shot. Having never bow hunted for turkeys we learned some tough lessons about how small the shot placement area is. The footage we got of the area is amazing and most stand locations are setup for filming which is a great convenience for us.

Unfortunately we couldn’t miss a lot of work so we were only able to stay at Brazos for three days. Thankfully Sunday being the last day we were there the weather broke off beautiful with mid seventy highs and a slight breeze. The birds didn’t work as well that morning but that afternoon I had a beautiful Texas Rio working into the blind. He was very nervous probably the bird that had spotted Richard drawing the day before. He never really relaxed the entire way in. I drew without being detected because he was behind a tree on his way in. It took him quiet awhile to walk the other few steps in and I was beginning to shake. He nervously began to feed in front of me at twenty yards. I took a deep breathe and settled in. On the footage you can see the bird turn to fly as soon as I release. I was unsure if turkeys could jump the string but I am sure from the footage that is just what he did. Had we not have already spooked him and he had come in relaxed I am certain we would have brought him home. What can I say? Lessons learned and that’s turkey hunting! We will for sure be back to Brazos Archery Outfitters to chase some more Rios. We want to personally thank Brazos Archery Outfitters for the hospitality you showed us and compliment you on a great establishment that is full of game. In the time we were there we saw several deer, dozens of hogs, and worked several turkeys. If anyone is interested in taking any game species Texas has to offer I suggest you call Brazos for an Archery experience you will never forget.
