This past turkey season was something else. I have to say that it was probably the worst season I have ever had, yet the memories that were made during it will never be forgotten and I would never give them up. Since I am aspiring to become a well-known hunter and my dad stands behind me in these wishes, he decided to plan a Grand Slam turkey hunt for me. Unfortunately, since we booked so late, we didn't get all the best times and that caused some major setbacks. First we went to Nebraska for their early bow season. It was a beautiful place and the people were great, but the birds were just not callable. Though I ended up not getting a bird there, three days in a blind with my dad definitely brought us closer together and that's something that I wouldn't give up for the world, since hunting is one big thing my dad and I both enjoy.
The second hunt I went on was in Florida. I flew down and met my dad at the airport in Palm Beach, because he was down there for work. That was my first time ever flying alone so that was an experience initself. The ranch we went to was really cool, but it was the end of their season and the birds were tough. Our guide put us on chunks of land that no one had hunted and still we were lucky if we saw a bird that day. Yet it was still a great time. I saw a lot of things I had never seen in the wild before like an armadillo, which I had seen but only dead. I also saw wild pigs for the first time while I was in Florida.
The third hunt was originally supposed to be in Texas, but unfortunately the fires down there destroyed like 3,000 acres ofthe guy's property so we had to reschedule with a man in Oklahoma. The ranch was about three hours northeast of Oklahoma City in a very interesting little town. The week before we got there, the town was actually having a Rattle Snake Rally, where these guys came in and caught over 2,000 rattlesnakes. This made me a little nervous since I was going to be crawling around in the same grass that all these snakes were caught in, but I toughened up and we got to hunting. The second day we were there the weather went crazy on us and though they were supposed to be having a drought, it POURED! After that the birds were hard to call and very unpredictable. I ended up not getting any birds. Probably the worst place was at home in Michigan where the birds were the toughest they had been in a long time. We hunted hard. I didn't end up getting all the birds and finishing my Slam, but I still wouldn't take it back. I met a lot of really helpful people and that's what hunting should be about the memories not just the kill.
